Great Scott! The future is finally here!  As anyone who loves the movies or uses the internet knows, October 21, 2015 is the date that Mary and Doc traveled to the future in Back to the Future II. Those films are my favorites of all time, which leaves me feeling both excited and bittersweet about today’s date. After today, the future of those movies will forever be in the past...what a strange feeling...

To celebrate, I've done an updated version of the Jenn & Bueno BTTF-themed art I originally created to ring in 2015 last January.
Jenn and Bueno: Future Day 2015 by StudioBueno

Happy Future Day, everyone! Remember to use caution on your hoverboards and to buckle up before flying your cars!

I didn't do this last year because I ran out of cards, but this year I'm resuming my usual tradition: I've got extra Studio Bueno Christmas cards (the art for which is currently my featured deviation), and if you want one, I'll send you one!

The first 5 people to reply to this journal entry expressing an interest in a card will receive one. It doesn't matter if I've sent you one in the past, it's first come, first served. The first five are guaranteed, but I'll accept two or three additional requests to be on a "standby" list, as I may end up with a couple of unexpected extras.

If you're one of the five, I'll contact you via note and get your name and address so your card can be on its way!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

I occasionally commission other artists to do their take on my characters, Jenn & Bueno (or just Jenn, in some cases.) It's always fun for me to see how they're interpreted by others.

I've recently added a few more to my growing collection, so I thought I'd share some of them here.

So, I'm about four months late with this, but tonight I discovered that Gillian Jacobs (of Community) apparently shared my Community/Frozen fan art on her Instagram feed some time ago. As documented here with a screen cap!

Here's the original art in question.

So, yeah, between this discovery and today's announcement that Community will be getting a season 6 after all, I'm one content fanboy.

So, I kind of needed to freshen up my main journal entry, and I thought, "Hey, I don't specifically promote my other sites here that often, so why not do it now?"

For those of you who do the tumblr thing, I have one of those. Lately I've been trying to make it kind of my primary site, along with this one:

I'm also on Instagram. It's not all art-related, but I've recently started trying to integrate my art as a bigger part of it:

Minty Art on Conan--AGAIN!

Mon Dec 23, 2013, 3:55 PM

Last Thursday (12/19/13), my "Minty the Candy Cane" (a.k.a. "A Very Minty Christmas") piece was featured on "Conan" again!
This is the third consecutive year they've used this as a bumper during the holiday season.

It's really fun and quite an honor to have made the appearance at all, let alone more than once. Many thanks, Team Coco!

Favorite Movies of 2012

Mon Dec 31, 2012, 11:28 AM

It's time once again for my nerdy "Top Ten Favorite Movies of the Year" list! As always, there were plenty of "want-to-see" movies I missed this year, but out of what I saw, I think I had the most fun with these:

1. Safety Not Guaranteed
Maybe it's just my apparent obsession with time travel stories, but this little indie comedy won my heart immediately.

2. Moonrise Kingdom
Some people said it was too "Wes Anderson-y" even for Wes Anderson. I don't necessarily disagree. I just don't apparently have a problem with that.

3. Paranorman
One of the most gorgeously animated movies I've seen in a while, and I enjoyed the story as well.

4. Wreck-It Ralph
Between this and 2010's Tangled, Disney really seems to be back on track with their animated offerings. I enjoyed the original characters and made-up video games as much as I loved seeing the appearances by actual classic characters.

5. Bernie
Jack Black turns in a great performance in this based-on-a-true story dark comedy.

6. The Avengers
More or less the perfect superhero blockbuster. And definitely the best on-screen Hulk so far.

7. Looper
Two time travel tales in the top ten this year!

8. Argo
Even knowing the outcome didn't keep this one from being extremely suspenseful. and with a lot more humor than I expected.

9. This is 40
My favorite comedy of the year. Paul Rudd and Lelsie Mann are great.

10. Cabin in the Woods
Not generally a big horror movie fan, but this send-up of all the classic horror movie tropes was too much fun not to love. Also, I'm morally obligated to include any movie that features an appearance by  a murderous unicorn in my top ten.

Honorable Mentions include Lincoln, Skyfall, Brave, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, The Hobbit, The Dark Knight Rises, and a few others. It's been a good year for movies! Now to catch up on all the ones I missed...

Thu Dec 20, 2012, 3:30 PM

I think I shared this just about everywhere else last week but forgot to post it here...

Last Thursday, my "Minty the Candy Cane" Conan fan art was featured as a bumper on the show!  This is actually the second year in a row they've used it.  As a huge Conan fan, I couldn't be more excited!

When I'm able, I like occasionally commission an artist to draw their own interpretation of my characters, Jenn & Bueno.  I don't usually post those to my da gallery, since I didn't do the drawing (and in some cases the artists in question aren't even on da to share the love).  So I just share them over at my regular blog.  But I didn't want you guys to miss out on seeing the great work, so I'm linking to it here! (And yes, I'm aware that it's quite a shame that the first new images of Jenn & Bueno in AGES weren't even drawn by me...the characters aren't dead yet, I swear!)

I'm posting the commissions below, but here's a link to the full blog post: studiobueno.blogspot.com/2012/…

In the Creative Doldrums

Sun Apr 1, 2012, 7:19 PM

Hello there!

Basically, I just needed to clear the previous,  very ancient journal entry off the main page.  Although I should probably apologize for being missing in action these past few months while I'm here. It seems I've recently hit a spot of major lack of creative motivation.  Part of it's been due to a busier schedule cutting in on free time, and part of it's due to who knows what. Of course I know these "droughts" happen to most everyone from time to time, but mine are seldom quite as lengthy as this one has been. Hopefully I'll be back into the swing of creating again before long! I've never stopped coming to admire the work of so many of my creative dA friends, but I like it more when I'm actively participating as well!

Favorite Movies of 2011

Fri Dec 30, 2011, 8:40 PM

Favorite Movies of 2011

It's time once again for my incredibly dorky, incredibly pointless list of personal favorite movies for the year. Two things of note before we begin:

I can obviously only rate the movies I saw. If I'd seen every movie I wanted to, the list might look a little different. Also, I didn't see nearly as many movies this year in general compared to recent years, so that gave me far fewer things to pick from for this list.

Also, I'm not necessarily ranking this based on what is supposedly the most finely crafted, amazing movie (though I think a few of them are). These are simply the movies I had the most fun watching, out of what I saw.

1. The Muppets (November 23, 2011)
Maybe it wasn't perfect, but it was darn near close. And maybe I'm biased since I'm a lifelong Muppet fan, but who cares? Jason Segel and crew successfully breathed new life into these beloved characters, bringing them closer to their original, Henson-era antics than they've been in a while. Full of humor and with heart to spare, no movie in 2011 put a bigger smile on my face.

2. Bridesmaids (May 13, 2011)
Easily one of the best comedies I've seen in some time (yes, I know The Muppets, which I ranked above this one, is technically a comedy, too, but I'm referring here to movies that fit exclusively into the comedy genre). Kristin Wiig does a phenomenal job leading a phenomenal cast in one of the most entertaining movies of the year.

3. Hugo (November 23, 2011)
I was surprised by how much I liked this movie--I hadn't even intended to see it until the positive reviews and word-of-mouth piqued my curiosity. Scorsese has crafted a film that engages both dramatically and visually (even the 3D was beautiful and well-used, and I'm no fan of that gimmick). I especially enjoyed how we were given, through fictional narrative, a sort of history lesson about one of the original pioneers of movies.

4. Young Adult (December 16, 2011)
A great story with a great cast under great direction. Really enjoyed this simple, darkly funny downer of a tale.

5. War Horse (December 25, 2011)
I know nothing of the novel or the stage play, but I thought the movie was very well executed. It's pure Spielberg-ian melodrama right from the beginning, but I found I didn't mind letting myself be taken in by it. The cinematography and intense action sequences add a lot to the experience.

6. Paul (March 18, 2011)
An irreverent and funny, nerd-friendly sci-fi movie. Kristin Wiig's supporting character manages to steal the show, which is saying something given she's paired with the excellent duo of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. And you know what? Even Seth Rogen playing basically Seth-Rogen-as-a-raunchy-alien wasn't so bad!

7. X-Men: First Class (June 3, 2011)
After an abysmal third installment to the original trilogy and a painfully lackluster Wolverine spin-off, it was great (and a little surprising) to actually enjoy myself during an X-Men move again.

8. Source Code (April 1, 2011)
Not as uniquely engaging as Duncan Jones' debut effort, Moon, but still an entertaining sci-fi thriller.

9. Captain America: The First Avenger (July 22, 2011)
Along with X-Men: First Class, I really enjoyed the retro-40's romp more than most recent superhero movies. It definitely left me feeling cautiously optimistic about next year's Avengers project.

10. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (December 21, 2011)
Yeah, I know, Tom Cruise is in it, and it can be bit hard to separate him from the characters he plays in movies. But I'm a huge fan of director Brad Bird's work in the field of animation (The Incredibles, Ratatouille, The Iron Giant, etc.) and I wanted to see his live-action debut. Story-wise, it's just your typical big-budget action movie, but the action itself is extremely well-shot and exciting. Looks like Bird has made a successful transition!

Honorable Mentions:
While I'm a bigger fan of the books than the movies, I thought Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was a nicely done conclusion to the film series. Winnie the Pooh, while definitely aimed at a younger audience, was charming and beautifully animated. Kung Fu Panda 2 and Rango were also fun animated fare. I also enjoyed Sherlock Holmes 2 and Thor as light, adventurous fun.

Disappointments and Let-Downs:
I really wanted to love Cowboys and Aliens, but it just sort of fell flat. Not terrible, just a bit of wasted potential. Super 8 was another movie that, while certainly well done, somehow failed to move me. And, finally, we have Cars 2. While I admittedly never expected to like it in the first place—and in that regard was not technically "disappointed"—it was indeed disappointing to see the always-stellar Pixar release something as profoundly lackluster (and profoundly un-requested) as this sequel. The animation was typically gorgeous, at least. Here's hoping next summer's Brave is a return to form!

Dragon*Con! Pictures and Video Clips

Mon Sep 5, 2011, 10:44 AM

I had a blast on my Saturday-only visit to Dragon*Con this year!  As stated in my previous journal entry, my main reason for going was to meet Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson and James Tolkan and see them in the Back to the Future Q&A panel.  That was great, but of course Dragon*Con is fun in general.  The people-watching alone is always worth the price of admission.

Below are links to my pictures on Flickr and a few video clips I took of the Q&A on YouTube. Enjoy!

Dragon*Con

Thu Sep 1, 2011, 4:16 PM

After much deliberation and Charlie Brown-like wishy-washiness on the matter, I've decided to make a one-day trip to Dragon*Con this year! I wasn't able to get a weekend pass/hotel, but this big ol' Back to the Future nerd just can't pass it up completely, knowing that Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson will be there! (Besides, it was a blast last year.)

So, I'm thinking this is where I'll be all day Saturday. Anyone else gonna be there? I'll be the dork dressed like Marty McFly (or one of them, anyway).

Any Interest in Original Art?

Tue May 31, 2011, 5:44 PM

A question:  If I were to clean house and sell the original drawings for many of the illustrations seen in my gallery (Jenn & Bueno stuff, fan art, a bit of everything), would anyone be interested in buying it at reasonable prices?  In most cases this would include an original rough sketch and an inked version together, though sometimes it would be one or the other.

I'm not asking for a commitment to actually purchase something, but I'm wondering if there's even enough interest to make it worth the trouble to get it all together?

I Took a Little Tumbl(r)

Mon May 2, 2011, 4:07 PM

Apparently I find it difficult to resist Internet trends.

As if the Studio Bueno blog (and other blogs), Twitter, Facebook and all of that junk weren't enough...I broke down and signed up for Tumblr as well.  I'm not sure what will be posted there...I'll probably just use it for random things that don't show up on my art blog, etc.  And I'll be kinda surprised if I actually succeed in maintaining it!  justonebanana.tumblr.com/

As long as I'm promoting links, here's a reminder that the Studio Bueno Studio Blog-O! exists.  It's mostly the same art I post to my gallery here, though I often share the pencil prelims and other extras with the posts there.  studiobueno.blogspot.com/

AUGH! I've been trapped in the creative doldrums for a good solid month now!

Do you ever go through those periods of time when you just don't feel inspired to pick up a pencil?  Brief periods of a few days every now and then are normal for me.  I figure they're like a time for recharging the creative batteries.  But once in a while, an extended lapse like this one occurs, and I hate it!

The worst part is, I know I technically want to draw, but my brain just can't be bothered to respond in kind. I've looked at the works of beloved artists, watched animation, and gone to all the other usual sources of inspiration, but it hasn't clicked yet.  Any tricks you guys/gals like to try when you're in a slump?

It will pass, and I'll be back to creating mediocre cartoon art before much longer! I always am.  I just thought I'd take a moment to complain about it.  Mainly because my last journal entry was getting to be a bit outdated and I needed it off the main page!
